{"id":9813,"date":"2019-02-28T01:52:34","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T05:52:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=9813"},"modified":"2019-02-28T01:52:34","modified_gmt":"2019-02-28T05:52:34","slug":"still-smiling-scott-robert-denyes-relishing-canada-games-silver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=9813","title":{"rendered":"Still smiling: Scott-Robert Denyes relishing Canada Games silver"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"StoryBody\" class=\"rtEditor\" title=\"(double-click to edit)\" data-role=\"none\">\n<p><strong>BEAVER BANK:<\/strong> First Canada Games, no problem for Scott-Robert Denyes.<\/p>\n<p>The Beaver Bank native skated to a silver medal performance in the Special Olympics Singles Level III male Free Program at the Canada Games in Red Deer, Alta. on Feb. 27.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview on Feb. 28, Scott said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am pretty happy at the result,\u201d said Scott. \u201cIt means I did my best and I got to where I wanted to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott dedicated his performance to his grandmother, who was his biggest fan and supporter in giving him encouragement through his early years. She died recently from cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was about to quit, but knowing she was supporting me I didn\u2019t,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen she passed away, it was hard but I wanted to remember her in a special way. And the Best way I could do that was through skating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The song he performed to, \u201cTears from Heaven\u201d by Eric Clapton, his grandmothers favourite song. The outfit he performed in was emblematic of that as it had the breast cancer-pink colour complete with the pink ribbon on the front.<\/p>\n<p>When he heard he had won silver, Scott said he had a smile a mile long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was pretty excited at that moment,\u201d he said. \u201cMy mom wouldn\u2019t stop crying. My whole team was there cheering for me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A day after the win, he was still on Cloud Nine.<\/p>\n<p>He knows the community of Beaver Bank and his schoolmates at Harold T. Barrett Junior High were proud of his accomplishment too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone back home was cheering for me,\u201d said Scott.<\/p>\n<p>Quebec won gold, while the Yukon grabbed bronze.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BEAVER BANK: First Canada Games, no problem for Scott-Robert Denyes.
