{"id":9867,"date":"2019-03-12T09:00:44","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T12:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thelaker.ca\/?p=9867"},"modified":"2019-03-12T09:00:44","modified_gmt":"2019-03-12T12:00:44","slug":"streatch-wonders-if-current-structure-for-wjcc-viable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging-z.thelaker.ca\/?p=9867","title":{"rendered":"Streatch wonders if current structure for WJCC viable"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"StoryBody\" class=\"rtEditor\" title=\"(double-click to edit)\" data-role=\"none\">\n<p><strong>WINDSOR JUNCTION: <\/strong>Steve Streatch said he would be interested in discussing whether the current structure in place with the Windsor Junction Community Centre is in its best interest for its long-term future.<\/p>\n<p>The councillor for Waverley-Fall River-Musquodoboit Valley was questioned on if a similar approach as to what is being put in place for the Waverley Community Association\u2014where the HRM looks after costs and budgeting, while a volunteer board continues to operate\u2014for the WJCC could be coming down the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs the structure that exists today the best approach?\u201d asked Streatch in an interview with <em>The Laker<\/em>. \u201cI don\u2019t know, but I am open to discussing all options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Streatch said the WJCC is a very important piece of the community of Windsor Junction. It is privately owned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is supported through an area rate that is collected by the municipality,\u201d said Streatch. \u201cFor all intense and purposes that is tax money that is collected and turned over to a private organization.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are agreements in place that look after this at this particular time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he\u2019s had people ask him why HRM hasn\u2019t already put in place the system they have at the Bicentennial Theatre in Middle Musquodoboit. The HRM took over the facility, taking the burden off of the volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe requirement won\u2019t be on the volunteer board to come up with a budget every year and to jump through the hoops to acquire the area rate funding,\u201d said Streatch. \u201cIt would then be funded by the general tax rate whereby everyone in HRM shares, not just the folks in the catchment areas of the LWF Ratepayers Association.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Streatch said those discussions have yet to be had. He said the continuity of the WJCC is not in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir funding is secure, the area rate is still in place to fund the WJCC and it\u2019s associated activities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Colleen Menard, chairwoman of the WJCC board, said the structure that currently exists works.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d<span class=\"_mh6 _wsc\"><span class=\"_3oh- _58nk\">If the councillor is looking for change, he should have that discussion with the community,\u201d said Menard when asked to respond to what Streatch said. \u201cDoes our LWF community think this kind of change would be positive? Has our councillor looked at the legalities involved with ownership of the WJCC?\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"_mh6 _wsc\"><span class=\"_3oh- _58nk\">She said as volunteers, they don\u2019t see the work they do as \u201cjumping through hoops\u201d. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"_mh6 _wsc\"><span class=\"_3oh- _58nk\">\u201cWe get a lot of joy from volunteering our time to ensure the LWF community can rely on the WJCC facility to create meaningful community connections and family memories,\u201d said Menard. \u201cThrough our AGM, our local residents raise their hands in support of our work, confirming that we are delivering these experiences, year after year.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WINDSOR JUNCTION: Steve Streatch said he would be interested in discussing whether the current structure in place with the Windsor Junction Community Centre is in its best interest for its long-term future.
